actupny:

The first annual International HIV Prevention Day is on July 17th.

Just like it’s everyone’s responsibility to try to get vaccinated, it’s everyone’s responsibility to prevent HIV. Do your part by getting tested, telling your friends and family about PrEP and U=U, and advocating for affordable PrEP.

This Year’s Focus: #BreakThePatent.

PrEP costs $6/mo to manufacture, but consumers are billed $1600/mo, making what should be basic preventive healthcare an extravagance that insurance companies are reluctant to cover and individuals cannot afford. Existing federal law says the U.S. government can seize patents for the public good, so there is no reason to wait years for Gilead Sciences’ patent to expire when we could all but stop HIV transmission now.

Events and Actions.

New York City: Come to the AIDS Memorial from 9AM-11AM on Tuesday, July 17th (Facebook event).

Boston, D.C., Dublin, London: There are planned sister actions in
these cities. Contact info@breakthepatent.org for details.

Other places in the U.S.: Sign up to help us break the patent and get generic PrEP on the market as soon as possible. This is a national campaign and we will email you ways you can help.

Everywhere: Use the #HIVPreventionDay and #BreakThePatent hashtags. Talk to the people in your life about modern HIV prevention.
